SARS-like Coronaviruses (SL-CoVs) belong to the genus Betacoronavirus of the family Coronaviridae, and are a group of enveloped single-stranded positive-sense RNA viruses. Systematically classified in the early 21st century along with relevant etiological research, this group of viruses has high genetic diversity and can be divided into several evolutionary clades based on gene sequence homology, with the core replication-related gene sequences of strains from different clades being highly conserved. The full length of the SL-CoVs genome is about 27~32kb, making it one of the groups with the largest genome size among known RNA viruses. Its genetic structure conforms to the typical characteristics of coronaviruses, including a 5' untranslated region, multiple overlapping open reading frames and a 3' untranslated region. It mainly encodes replicase polyprotein, spike protein, membrane protein, envelope protein and nucleocapsid protein. Its complex gene regulatory mechanism provides an important sample for RNA virus evolution research.

SL-CoVs viral particles are pleomorphic, mainly spherical, with a diameter of about 80~120nm. Their structure consists of a core, nucleocapsid and envelope from the inside out. The core is a single-stranded positive-sense RNA genome, which is tightly coiled with nucleocapsid protein to form a helically symmetric nucleocapsid structure; the envelope is derived from the endoplasmic reticulum-Golgi intermediate compartment of host cells, with a variety of functional glycoproteins embedded on the surface. The core functional proteins include spike protein (S), membrane protein (M) and envelope protein (E). Among them, the spike protein is the iconic structural protein of the virus, which can form rod-shaped surface spikes and determine the antigenic properties and receptor recognition specificity of the virus; the membrane protein is the main structural protein of the envelope and plays a core role in viral particle assembly and morphological maintenance; the envelope protein is present in a small amount and participates in the budding and release process of the virus. A small number of auxiliary proteins are also distributed in the matrix region between the nucleocapsid and the envelope, which are involved in regulating the efficiency of viral replication and assembly.
